Every time I have driven Newfound Gap Rd when visiting the Great Smokys, stopping at the Ben Morton Overlook is a must.
The Most Accessible Overlook
The Morton Overlook is one of the many pull-off overlooks along US – 441 (Newfound Gap Rd) but is the most scenic.
Although, the Morton Overlook and the others nearby can become crowded, especially around sunset. Try to get to the overlook at the least an hour before sunset to get a spot for pictures.
How to Get Here
You can reach the Morton Overlook from either side of the US – 441 from Tennessee or North Carolina. The overlook is 33 minutes (16 miles) from Gatlinburg and 31 minutes (20 miles) from Cherokee.
More to See
On our way along the scenic Newfound Gap drive, Newfound Gap overlook is three minutes from the Morton Overlook. This area has a big parking lot with great views but can become crowded due to easy accessibility.
Clingmans Dome is another must-see place to visit while you are in the area. Just 0.1 miles from Newfound Gap, turn onto Clingmans Dome road and follow seven miles to the top parking lot. For a complete guide to Clingmans Dome, click here.
