Valley of the Gods

The Valley of the Gods is where iconic Utah mesas and buttes tower over a vast and tranquil landscape near Mexican Hat, Utah.

How to Get Here

The Valley of the Gods is 30 minutes (32 miles) north of Mexican Hat, Utah.

I choose to start on the east entrance on US-163. The west entrance on US-261 can also access the 17-mile road loop.

Enjoy the Scenery

A 17-mile loop road accesses this red sandstone desert past the massive rock monoliths. This 2-3 hours drive follows gravel roads, sharp bends, steep climbs, and a few small creeks to pass. As long as the road is dry, any car will make the drive.

Free Camping

There is no entry fee; camping is free as the Bureau of Land Management owns the land.

The area has no designated trails, as you can roam freely anywhere. Many fantastic camping options are available along the 17-mile path.

Best Time to Visit

The great thing about the Valley of the Gods is that you will experience a quiet sandstone desert far away from civilization and maybe a few cars passing by here and there. So, if you visit eastern Utah during the peak summer tourist months, visiting Valley of the Gods is a great option to escape the crowds.

Fall and spring are less trafficked, and the temperatures are more comfortable.

Bring Everything You Need

The Valley of the Gods is miles from gas stations and stores and offers no amenities for travelers visiting. Everyone visiting must bring enough water and food, especially in the hot summer.

I visited here over the summer during a 110-degree heatwave; a tarp for cover and a cooler with ice bearable enough to stay the day and camp.

Leave No Trace

Minimize litter and damage to the Valley of the Gods by practicing leave no trace. Pack out everything you bring in and dispose of waste properly.

Conclusion

Visiting the Valley of the Gods was perfect for escaping the summer crowds. It offered a fast landscape with fantastic scenery along the drive. If you want an authentic middle-of-nowhere experience, the Valley of the Gods is a must-see.
