View from Spruce Knob parking lot

Spruce Knob

Spruce Knob is West Virginia’s highest peak at around 4,800 feet above sea level.

Like the photo above, are viewable by following Forest Road 104 to the top of Spruce mountain.

Directions

From Seneca Rocks, take WV-28S/WV-55W for ten miles

Turn right onto Briery Gap Run Rd.

In 2.4 miles, follow Forest Road 112 for 7.4 miles to the FR 104 Intersection.

Turn right and follow FR 104 for 1.6 miles to the Spruce Knob parking lot.

Views to See

You take the Spruce Knob Trail and Whispering Spruce Trail from the parking lot for a roundtrip walk around the mountain.

Many fantastic views are easily viewable along the .6-mile trail.

This trail is typically busy on the weekends especially when the weather is nice.

Halfway along the trail, there will be a multiple story observation tower, but I find that the views from the top lack the scenery witnessed along the trails.

How to Get There

From Spruce Knob parking lot, go back down Forest Rd 104 till you see the right turn sign for Spruce Lake.

Once you make the turn follow Forest Rd 112 for 6 miles until you make a right onto Forest Rd 1 and keep left past Spruce Knob Lake Campground.

Parking on sunny midday weekends can be difficult to find due to the lakes small parking lot.

There is a 1-mile long loop around the lake.

The best time to come here is early morning when the fog is resting on the water from a warm night meeting a cold morning.

Spruce Lake is also a popular fishing spot, as you may see many fisherman along your walk.

This photo was by far my favorite from my trip at Spruce Lake.

From the fog lifting off the lake during sunrise to the fisherman mid-cast on his kayak, the image’s composition makes for a perfect shot.
